Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 10, 2026

Weekend Owl ("Weekend Owl", "we", "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and your rights under Canadian privacy law — specifically the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

1. What we collect

We collect only the information we need to run the site and serve you well:

  • Account information — if you register, we store your name, email address, and a hashed password. We never store passwords in plain text.
  • Newsletter subscribers — email address and (optionally) your preferences for what you'd like to hear about.
  • Saved favourites and reminder preferences — the deals and events you've saved, plus the reminder timings you chose.
  • Business listings — any information you submit when claiming or adding a listing.
  • Usage data — anonymized analytics such as page views, device type, and approximate location (city-level), used to understand which parts of the site are useful.
  • Cookies — a session cookie to keep you logged in, and functional cookies for things like remembering your preferred city.

2. How we use your information

  • To operate the site, authenticate you, and display your saved content.
  • To send the reminder emails you've opted into (deals and events you favourited).
  • To send the weekly newsletter if you've subscribed — with a clear unsubscribe link in every email.
  • To improve the site — understanding which listings, neighbourhoods, and features matter to our users.
  • To respond to your questions, corrections, and support requests.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not build shadow profiles on non-users.

3. Email communications

Transactional emails (password resets, account notifications, reminders you specifically opted into) are sent as needed. Newsletter and promotional emails are only sent with your consent, and every one includes a one-click unsubscribe link. We send from [email protected].

4. Third-party services

We use a small number of third-party services to run the site:

  • Google Places — to enrich business listings with photos, hours, and location data.
  • Cloudflare — for DDoS protection, caching, and TLS. Cloudflare may process basic request metadata.
  • Event and deal sources — event data is imported from public listings (Eventbrite, Ticketmaster, NowToronto, DestinationTO, etc.). We link out to these platforms for ticketing.

When you click through to an external site, that site's privacy policy applies — not ours.

5. Data retention

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account or email us to request deletion, we remove your personal data within 30 days (subject to any legal retention obligations). Newsletter subscribers can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any newsletter, which removes them from the mailing list immediately.

6. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data: HTTPS everywhere, hashed passwords, access controls on our servers, and regular security updates. No system is 100% secure, but we treat your data with care.

7. Your rights

Under Canadian privacy law, you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal information we hold about you.
  • Request that we correct any inaccuracies.
  • Ask us to delete your data.
  • Withdraw consent to marketing communications at any time.
  • Complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you believe your rights have been violated.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected].

8. Children

Weekend Owl is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy as the site evolves. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be announced via the site or by email to registered users.

10. Contact
